Abstract
Portal vein thrombosis has been recognized as a rare disease and the most common cause of perhepatic portal hypertension in children. The patients with prehepatic portal hypertension present with splenomegaly, ascites, varix bleeding and failure to thrive. In over 50% of the patients, no definitive cases can be discerned and the remainders are with congenital abnormalities in the heart, major blood vessels, biliary system or renal system, with which the portal vein is obstructed by-an acquired thrombotic or infective cause.
We experienced a case of prehei)atic portal hypertension secondary to portal vein thrombosis in a year-old boy who¢¥had suffered from frequent hematemesis and .melena.
Thrombosis of the portal vein was confirmed by splenoportography, and the thrombosis and porta hypertension were well controlled by splenorenal shunt operation without any serious complication. We report this case and made a review of literatures.
